Women to meet for Community Day

OTISFIELD — Church Women United will meet at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at the Community of the Resurrection for World Community Day. The program will be “Sights and Sounds of Harmony.”

All are welcome. Refreshments will be served. To carpool, meet at 8:45 a.m. at St. Catherine’s Church in Norway.

Heywood members to make cards

NORWAY — The Heywood Club will meet Monday, Nov. 5, at the clubhouse when Christmas cards will be made with Becky Kostivik.

Lions Club to hold tournament

HARRISON — The Lions Club will hold a Texas hold’em tournament from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at the VFW Hall, 176 Waterford Road.

Entry fee is $55. Space is limited to 100 players. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Refreshments will be available. Proceeds will be used to provide community services.

Knitting guild to learn new craft

PARIS — Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the First Congregational Church. Dee Farr will teach a craft. A reminder is made that children’s mittens for Christmas are due on Nov. 15.

OTISFIELD — The food pantry at Spurrs Corner Church, Route 121, will be open Tuesday, Nov. 6. The pantry is open the first and third Tuesdays of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. For information, call 583-4780 or 627-4329.
 
Sunday, Veterans Day services set

PARIS — The First Universalist Church on Pine Street will feature Anita White as guest speaker at the 10 a.m. worship service Sunday, Nov. 4. Music is under the direction of Donna Hurd and Sunday school is under the direction of Renee Wales.

Coffee and fellowship will follow the worship service and all are welcome. Childcare is available.

A special Veterans Day service is planned for 10 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, with Sarah Glynn, commander of the Foster Carrol American Legion Post, as speaker. All veterans and the public are welcome to attend the patriotic service. The church is wheelchair and handicapped accessible.

Loon Echo Trek raises $37,000

BRIDGTON — The 12th annual Loon Echo Trek to benefit Loon Echo Land Trust saw more than 100 cyclists start the 100-mile ride. More than 200 trekkers riding the 25- and 50-mile courses, as well as hikers who climbed Pleasant Mountain, left at 10 a.m.

A total of $37,000 was raised from the event, including entry fees, pledges raised by participants and business sponsorship contributions. An additional $35,000 was received in in-kind contributions from area businesses.

Top individual fundraisers were Ken Smith, $1,400; David Silk, $1,000; and John Keller, $820. Prizes for individuals included a season pass to a ski area, a weekend stay at a retreat and a weekend getaway at a lodge. Trekkers who raised at least $250 received a bag full of goodies.

The 13th annual Loon Echo Trek is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013.
