AUBURN — Charles Spiro Bournakel, 73, of Lewiston passed away Nov. 1, at the Hospice House, after a courageous battle with cancer.
The second of three children born to Spiro and Antigone Bournakel in Lewiston in 1939, Charles graduated from Lewiston High School in 1957, and Bentley College, where he earned an associates degree in 1959. After college, he also served in the U.S. Air Force, before working for both the state of Maine as an auditor and as proprietor of his family’s wholesale newspaper distribution business.
Charles was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and had a great passion for Greek food and culture, as well as traveling with his family. Among his most memorable experiences were his family trips to Greece and spending summers surrounded by friends and family at Tacoma Lake in Litchfield.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kiki Bournakel of Lewiston; three sons, Dean Bournakel of Largo, Fla., Christopher Bournakis of Auburn and Nicholas Bournakel of Portland; his mother, Antigone Bournakel; and his two siblings, George Bournakel and wife, Kay and Angela Bournakel, all of Yarmouth.
