Geiger gets 790 trick-or-treaters

When the last trick-or-treater left his door Wednesday night, Halloween enthusiast Peter Geiger reported he had 790 visitors, which was a record.

“It was nonstop fun all night,” Geiger said Thursday, adding that he averaged 260 trick-or-treaters per hour.

Geiger gives out king-size candy bars, one for showing up, three if the trick-or-treater knows the password, which is spread through a radio show and on school intercoms on Halloween day. Trick-or-treaters get to pick which candy they want. The most popular was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, followed by Kit Kat bars and Skittles.

Too early for Christmas!

So we’re working in the newsroom Thursday, still munching Halloween candy (I’m trying not to smudge chocolate on the keyboard), when a disturbing email drops in our inboxes. It’s from L.L. Bean, announcing it’s holding a Christmas tree lighting on Nov. 16.

Christmas tree lighting?! Can’t they wait until we put the pumpkin decorations away and finish the candy? Bean spokeswoman Kathy Whitney seemed to understand, saying she waits to announce the tree-lighting date until after Halloween.
