JAY — Clap. Clap. Whoosh.

That’s what Jay Elementary School fourth-graders did Tuesday, using their words and hands to send positive energy to a fellow student each time they had the courage to tell others a rule for riding on a school bus.

It is Buddy Week in the elementary schools here and Livermore.

Students are promoting kindness to others this week with hopes their efforts will continue long after.

Tuesday was peaceful busing day.

Jennifer Stone, an RSU 73 social worker, and Amy Gatchell, education coordinator for the Franklin Children’s County Task Force, educated fourth-graders on bus rules and promoted fun and positive thinking at the same time.

The school’s Civil Rights Team also helped out with the weekly program.

Stone asked the group how many ride the school bus.

About half the students from all three fourth grades at Jay Elementary School raised their hands.

Many of the students also agreed that riding the bus was part of the school day.

“All of the rules you follow in school, you have to follow on the bus,” Stone said.

The challenge for students will be following the bus rules and earning a paper bee when they have a peaceful bus ride.

Gatchell told students to turn to another student and discuss a bus rule. They then had to decide which one they would be comfortable saying in front of a class.

No drinking on the bus, one student said.

Clap. Clap. Whoosh. Positive energy was sent that student’s way.

In the end, they named all of the bus rules.

Those rules are:

* Use quiet voices.

* Ride safe; stay seated.

* Respect the bus driver, other students and property; no put-downs.

* Keep hands and feet to yourself.

* Report or disclose any problems to an adult.

* No food or drink.

* Remember that when overhead lights come on, talking stops.
