TURNER — The public is invited to attend a ceremony at noon on Veterans Day, Sunday, Nov. 11, at the town Village Monument.

Selectmen on Monday shared an invitation from the American Legion Turner Memorial Post 111 for the public to attend the ceremony honoring fallen service members. State Rep. Jeff Timberlake will be a guest at the ceremony.

Androscoggin County Sheriff Guy Desjardins and County Commissioner Randall Greenwood discussed options for dispatching the Turner Fire and Rescue departments and for the public safety answering point, the facility that answers 911 calls.

They explained the fees proposed by the county commissioners to have the county communications center continue furnishing services to Turner in 2013. The fees are $2 per person for PSAP, $6.15 per person for police dispatching and $2.50 per person for fire and EMS dispatch service. Turner does not have its own police department. The town’s fee for 2013 would be $25,803.

Desjardins said that if the county’s small towns rejected this proposal, they would have to join the Lewiston-Auburn system or find another way to answer 911 calls and dispatch emergency equipment.

Selectmen said continuing with the county system would be best for Turner. However, they wanted to consider all options before deciding at their next meeting. Town Manager Scott LaFlamme will develop a spreadsheet comparing the cost of all alternatives and present it to selectmen at their next meeting.

In other business:

* Code Enforcement Officer Roger Williams reported that he had inspected all of the junkyards in town. They were all working on required improvements to their sites. Selectman Ralph Caldwell expressed his displeasure that after eight years of warning that improvements had to be made, the owners had waited until the last minute to get into compliance with regulations.

* Selectmen questioned whether the new owners of the former Chick-A-Dee Restaurant on Route 4 had obtained proper permits before expanding parking facilities. While expressing their support for the business, they said the owners must comply with town ordinances. Williams was directed to check with the owners to verify that they were in compliance.

* LaFlamme reported that law enforcement was still following leads to recover the town’s 1988 Bicentennial Bell that was stolen recently. Funds were to be collected at the polling place to be used as a reward or for a replacement.

* There will be a public meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Town Hall to discuss the replacement of the Turner Center Bridge.
