FARMINGTON — Bernard J. Purington, 87, a resident of Elm Street, Jay, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Tuesday, Nov. 6, at Sandy River Center, where he had resided for the past two weeks.

He was born June 22, 1925, in Lewiston, the son of Norman and Elizabeth (Fitzpatrick) Purington. He was a 1943 graduate of Lewiston High School, Auburn Maine School of Commerce, University of Maine Farmington, earning his bachelor in business and receiving his masters in business at Auburn University in Auburn, Ala.

Barney served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. On June 25, 1956, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, he married his wife of 56 years, Rolande Fournier. He was a business teacher at Jay High from 1953 to 1976 and owned and operated Tri-Town Business Service from 1966 to 2006.

He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church and served as a eucharistic minister and lector. Barney also served on the St. Rose Church Council, St. Rose Finance Committee, St. Rose School Board Chairman and 24 years on the Jay School Board.

He was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for more than 10 years for Troop 524 Pack 399. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 and AmVets Post 33 in Jay and the Maine Teachers Association and National Teachers Association.

He enjoyed camping at Pinegrove Campground in Canton, playing cards and family get-togethers.

He is survived by his wife, Rolande Purington of Jay; his daughter, Kathy Purington of Farmington; his sons, Ron Purington of Jay, Jim Purington and his wife, Barbara, of Livermore Falls, Roland and Jeff Purington, both of Jay, Ken Purington of Farmington and Chris Purington and his wife, Tasha, of Waipahu, Hawaii; 12 grandchildren, Cassandra, Jayde, Nathan, Morgan, Cassandra Lefsky, William, Leanne, Ashley, Megan, Lisa, Emily and John; one great-grandchild, Camdyn; siblings, Mary Lachance of San Antonio, Fla., and brother, Norman Purington and his wife, Connie, of Tucson, Ariz.

He was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth “Betty” Gendron; and his brother, Thomas Purington.
