Investigations of the burglary at Abbott Bros., last Sunday, begin to take shape. So far as the police are concerned there has been some encouragement in the returns from the circulars sent out describing the loot of furs and suits. One city has sent in word that they had seen certain goods that resembled the stolen property. A mysterious couple is also being followed. A few days before the burglary, a man and a woman came to Lewiston and took rooms at a boarding house. They were seen loitering around in the vicinity of Abbott’s and are known to have been opposite the store seemingly looking it over. The man attracted attention by his peculiar pallor, described as the pallor of a man who has been in prison. He was very tall.

U.S. Senator Edmund S. Muskie today announced the appointment of Lewiston Police Chief Roland C. Amnott to the position of Chief of Police Safety for the Ivory Coast of Africa by the Agency for International Development. His duties there, the senator said, will include the establishment of law enforcement agencies. An Auburn native, Amnott has been with the Lewiston Police Department since 1937. Another one-time Lewiston resident, former Second District Congressman Frank Coffin, is deputy director of the Agency for International Development.

More than 150 students enrolled in 44 high schools from across the state plan to visit Bates College Wednesday, Nov. 11, for the college’s annual “Maine Day.” They will receive a firsthand look at Bates, founded in 1855, the oldest co-educational college or university in New England and the second oldest in the country. The day’s schedule will include campus tours, classroom visits and lunch in Memorial Commons, where the high school guests will have opportunities to talk informally with Bates students.
