There has recently been erected on the roof of the Lunn & Sweet Shoe in Auburn, a large secondary supply tank. If the city water gave out in case of a large conflagration, water from this tank would supply the automatic water sprinklers of the shop. This and other emergency contrivances, in addition to the general construction of the large shop on Minot Avenue, obtains for the Lunn & Sweet Co. one of the lowest insurance rates in New England.

Students at two Auburn schools were put to the test today, as two surprise Civil Defense alerts were conducted. Auburn CD Director John Jordan said that the surprise alerts called at Lincoln and Chamberlain schools this morning were, “very, very successful.” He reported that only the principal of the two schools, Rodney MacNeill, knew of the planned alerts. “The students ran for shelter in the corridors and down in the basements, away from all windows,“ Jordan said. Kathy Hodge had just exited the Maine Turnpike as she was driving home late Sunday afternoon when she spotted something blue on Washington Street. The Mexico woman was stunned when she stopped to investigate. On the shoulder of the road was a pocketbook with nearly $300 in cash, credit cards and a checkbook inside. She turned it in to the police. A grateful resident of Auburn called Hodge Sunday afternoon to thank her for recovering her pocketbook and the money. The woman had inadvertently left the pocketbook on top of her car and it had dropped off while she was driving along Washington Street.
