LIVERMORE FALLS — The RSU 73 board Thursday night set dates to review options for reconfiguring one or more buildings in Jay to house all Spruce Mountain High School students. Directors also set a public hearing on the issue.

The board hired Bunker & Savage Architects of Augusta to assess space at Spruce Mountain High School in Jay, which is next to Spruce Mountain Middle School and near the Community Center. The purpose is to determine whether there is enough space in one location for the more than 500 Spruce Mountain High School students in Jay and Livermore Falls.

The board will review the options and costs at a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the central office on Cedar Street.

A public hearing will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Spruce Mountain Middle School.

Whichever option the board chooses must be approved by residents of Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls. Costs for renovation would come from a bond, or possibly some could come from the state, Superintendent Robert Wall said.

Administrators and board members have been searching for a way to house all students under one roof since the former Jay School Department and RSU 36 in Livermore Falls voted to merge in the summer of 2011.

The goal is to have all students in Jay by the beginning of school year 2013-14, with one principal for the school.

Wall said base bids and alternative options would be presented at the workshop.

“We need to narrow them down,” he said.

The board must make a decision on which option to follow before Dec. 14, the deadline for applying for state funding. The board’s next regular meeting is Dec. 13.

In other business, student representatives from both school campuses were appointed to the board Thursday night.

From the Livermore Falls campus, Megan Norris, 17, was chosen. She said she wanted to sit on the board so students would get accurate information on the merger plans.

“We were getting information through the grapevine and didn’t know what was happening,” she said. “I hope to bring information from the board to the school and take feedback from students back to the board.”

From the Jay campus, Melanie Robitaille was appointed. She did not attend Thursday’s meeting.
