FARMINGTON — Franklin County’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services, or SAVES, invites the community to view the documentary film “The Invisible War” about sexual assault in the military.

The film will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the University of Maine at Farmington in Roberts Learning Center, room C23. This event is free and open to the public.

Following the viewing, a panel will discuss the information, and answer questions. There will also be sexual assault crisis advocates available for anyone who may need support.

“’The Invisible War’ does a remarkable job at exposing rape in the military. It is a powerful and enlightening documentary that I recommend all to see,” SAVES coordinator Nick Citriglia said.

This event is a collaborative effort between SAVES, Tri-County Mental Health Services and the University of Maine at Farmington.

Kirby Dick’s film paints a startling picture of the extent of rape in the military, according to the website www.invisiblewarmovie.com. The Department of Defense estimates there were 19,000 violent sex crimes in the military in 2010, the website said.

For nearly 30 years, SAVES has helped people in Franklin County recover from the trauma of sexual violence. Through school and community-based programs, SAVES works to raise awareness, educate and prevent sexual violence.

In October of 2011, SAVES merged with two sexual assault services agencies in Oxford and Androscoggin Counties to create Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Services. The statewide, toll free, 24-hour helpline is 1-800-871-7741.
