Meeting for Women in Construction

WATERVILLE — The Maine Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction will tour the Colby College Museum of Art at 5:30 p.m. prior to their monthly dinner meeting, Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Matt Hossfeld, project engineer for Consigli Construction, will provide a site tour of the museum, including the 3D BIM model created prior to construction. Construction is in its final stage, and the building is projected to be completed at the end of the year.

Chapter members will meet at the Weathervane Restaurant for dinner and their monthly meeting following the tour, at 6:45.

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Emblem Club will hold its annual Christmas craft fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Elks Lodge in West Farmington.

A food drive will also be held with all donations going to the Chamber of Commerce for their Christmas baskets.

Balsam sale helps Safe Voices

LEWISTON — Maine-made balsam fir decorations make great gifts and help support Safe Voices, the domestic violence resource center serving Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties.

Available are a traditional, handmade, double sided wreath accented with pine cone clusters with burgundy berry centers and a holiday burgundy velvet bow; a wreath with natural cones and a purple velvet bow (purple is the color for domestic violence awareness); or a kissing ball adorned with burgundy bows.

Visiting writer to read from work

FARMINGTON — The University of Maine at Farmington Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program will host Maine author Susan Conley as the next writer in the 2012-13 Visiting Writers Series. Conley will read from her work at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15, in The Landing in the UMF Olsen Student Center. This event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a signing by the author.

A native of Maine, Conley is a nonfiction writer, novelist and poet. Her recent nonfiction book, “The Foremost Good Fortune,” is her debut memoir in which she writes about her and her family’s two-year experience living in a high-rise apartment in Beijing. Their lives change in Beijing with many daunting experiences including when Conley learns she has breast cancer.

Conley is currently finishing writing a fiction novel.

Conley taught poetry and literature at Emerson College, but eventually moved back to Portland, where she co-founded and served as the executive director of The Telling Room, a nonprofit creative writing center for students ages 6-18.

Donations for LaPlante family

STRATTON — An account has been set up at Camden National Bank as well as containers at Fotter’s Market, Northland Cash and Flagstaff Fuel asking for contributions to help Peter LaPlante Sr., who has recently had a heart attack and will be unable to work for an undetermined amount of time.

Pete and Karen were long-time residents of Stratton, moved to Florida, and then back to Maine. Pete was a local carpenter and Karen worked at Spillover for about 10 years.

Reich Trust receives grant

RANGELEY — The Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust, a Maine nonprofit corporation that owns and operates The Wilhelm Reich Museum in Rangeley, has received a grant of $596 given to purchase two 8-inch solar filters, two 4-inch solar filters and a camera adapter to be used in the year-round program on astronomy for all ages as part of the Natural Science Program that was started in 1990 and continues today at The Wilhelm Reich Museum. The programs will be open to schools, youth groups and the general public.

Historical Society meeting, supper

FARMINGTON — The Farmington Historical Society will meet Monday, Nov. 19, starting at 6 p.m. with a potluck supper, followed by a business meeting and update with discussion regarding the capital campaign. Deer habitat to be discussed

FARMINGTON — Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine, the Maine Forest Service and MSAD 9 Adult Education will hold an informational session on managing woodlots for Deer Habitat at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Farmington Middle School (around back, cafeteria entrance) on Middle Street. This is a free workshop and open to all. No need to preregister.

MEDIFW Wildlife Biologist Bob Cordes will speak on deer ecology and habitat, MFS District Forester Patty Cormier will speak on forest management relative to deer habitat and Marcia Baker of the Rangeley Region Guides and Sportsmen’s Association will speak on their very successful program of creating and maintaining food plots for deer in the Rangeley area.

Garden Club to meet Nov. 20

FARMINGTON — Mt. Blue Area Garden Club members will entertain guest speaker Will Bonsall from the International Seed Saving Exchange at their next meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Trinity United Methodist Church on the Farmington Falls Road.
