“Gunboat” Sweeney, supposed to be on hand to fight Ernest Boucher, left town last evening for parts unknown. The crowd that attended the National A.C. Show was disappointed in consequence and the management was $25 in, the amount of Sweeney’s forfeit. When Boucher and Sweeney are compared, it can be seen that the latter cannot be blamed for departing in haste for the Auburn strong boy would have had the advantage by not a few pounds.

50 years ago, 1962
The Lewiston Health Department today urged parents and youngsters alike to take precautions to curb the increasing number of cases of infectious hepatitis in the city. Health Officer Cecile Levasseur noted that 16 cases of the disease were reported last week. Six more cases were reported just yesterday. It is believed that the disease is being spread from hand to mouth and diligent hand washing was urged.

25 years ago, 1987
A vandal armed with a pellet or BB gun destroyed windows in a fast-food restaurant, buses and other businesses Sunday, causing more than $2,000 damage, according to Lewiston police. Seven windows in five buses and vans at Hudson Bus Lines at 280 Bartlett St. were shot out. At Burger King restaurant at 827 Lisbon St., customers were eating in a dining room at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday when a double-pane window was cracked by pellet. A glass door at DeOrsey’s at the Lewiston mall was also cracked by the pellet gun. The marksman also shot out a glass window on the front door of the Knights of Columbus hall, and a side window of a car was cracked.
