LIVERMORE FALLS — The new hours for window service at the East Livermore post office are proposed to be 2:15 to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday window service will remain 8 to 11:45 a.m.
It is a reduction of 5¾ hours each weekday.
The U.S. Postal Service is reducing hours at thousands of rural post offices around the country to try to run more efficiently. Representatives sent out surveys to customers and plan to use the information before making a final decision on reducing hours.
The proposed new hours and results of a customer survey are posted in the lobby of the East Livermore Post Office. The new hours have not been officially approved, and a start date was not listed as of Wednesday.
Fifty-seven customer surveys were mailed out and 17 were returned, according to information posted in the lobby. The surveys asked what customers would prefer, including realignment of hours or closing the post office.
Ten surveys, or 59 percent, listed realignment of hours. Three surveys, or 18 percent, listed a village post office option as preference. Four surveys, or 24 percent, did not select an option. None of the surveys requested a delivery option for a roadside mailbox or neighboring post office.
Customers’ access to mailboxes inside the lobby at the post office will not change.
Nearby post offices are in Livermore Falls, 5½ miles away, Wayne, approximately 6 miles away, or Jay, about 7 miles away.
Other post offices in the area facing reduced hours are Dryden, Jay, Livermore, Eustis, Farmington Falls, New Sharon, New Vineyard, New Portland, Phillips, Strong and Temple.
No meetings have been set for those post offices yet.
