MONMOUTH — David Shaw and Donald Kinney, longtime members of the Monmouth Snowmobile Club, are thankful for all the support residents have given the club.
“The townspeople have been very kind to us,” said Shaw, building committee member.
When the property on which their former clubhouse was sold in 2010, members started looking around town for an affordable alternative. Finding none, they turned to their neighbors and asked if they could lease a portion of land behind the Public Works building.
The referendum at the annual town meeting passed in June 2011 and the 50-member club started looking for funding. A year later, they had what they needed and broke ground on the project.
“This is the perfect spot because we have three trails that converge here,” Shaw said. “Our biggest goal is to get in and have it covered by next winter.”
“Yeah, we don’t like doing repairs on our equipment outside,” Kinney, past president, said. “Once you lose a nut, it’s gone forever!”
Along with their trail grooming equipment used on the 50 miles the club maintains, the clubhouse will protect their tractor, club sleds and four-wheeler. They will also have meetings and gatherings at the structure, which is being built in phases. And the lease is the best part of the location; it’s $1 per year.
“Curtis Lunt, the town manager, has been very helpful to get this through. Herb Whittier, head of Public Works, and every selectman were very helpful,” Shaw said. “In the long run, we think this will be a better building for us.”
If the club, whose members range in age from 18 to 80 years old, ever disbands, the building is being built so it can accommodate larger trucks.
“It will cede to the town,” Shaw said.
