JAY — The third annual Hope With Every Step Family Fun Day was a huge success, raising more than $38,000 for the A-T Children’s Project.
Despite the threat of rain hundreds turned out to support the event held in honor of Josh and Brooke Brochu and Emmy Rowles, three local children afflicted with Ataxia Telangiectasia.
The fun-filled day began with a 23-mile bike ride and 5K race. Fifty-nine runners and walkers participated in the 5K race/walk. The top male and female runners were Ross Lafrenier with a time of 18:29.40 and Cindy Peruta with a time of 26:28.00.
The improv comedy group Teachers Lounge Mafia emceed the event and kept the laughs flowing as they performed for an enthusiastic crowd. Matthew Gilbert and Drew Masse provided great live music.
The Spruce Mountain Cheerleaders led the crowd in a fun filled dance. A honking horn could often be heard as kids explored the Walmart Touch a Truck. Josh Brochu said of the truck, “I loved blowing the horn!”
The Maine Antique Tractor Club provided a barrel train which was in constant motion as excited children took their turn on the ride. “Jail and Bail” was a big hit with families. The mock jail was filled to capacity for much of the day as parents and children had jailer Kim Wick ‘arrest’ their love ones in the name of charity. Those arrested were eventually bailed by family and friends for a good cause.
When asked about their favorite part of the day, Seth and Jenna Badeau agreed, “The bounce houses are the best.” Mad Tents LLC provided the giant slide, obstacle course and two bounce castles. Food and raffles rounded out the day.
