PORTLAND — Lockhart L. Smith of Lewiston passed away in Portland on Nov. 20.
He was the son of Charles I. and Edith R. Hayes Smith, born in Portland, on June 6, 1917. Lockhart graduated from Portland High School, the Class of 1935.
He married the former Jeannette Dame on Dec. 17, 1941, at Trinity Episcopal Church in Portland. He served with 103rd Infantry, 43rd division, from 1941-1945 in the South Pacific. He was discharged as sergeant and received the Bronze Star in the Philippines.
He worked for New England Telephone Company for 30 years, retiring in 1976 as cable foreman in the Lewiston office.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, Deering Lodge Portland, member of the Maine Consistory Valley of Portland , Yates Lodge of Perfection, Council of Princes of Jerusalem, Dunlop Chapter Rose Croix, Kora Legion of Honor, Kora Shrine of Lewiston, Lake Region Shrine Club, Androscoggin Shrine Club, was very active with Kora Circus committee and was a member of the Ralph Caldwell Post No. 129 American Legion and the Fairlawn Country Club.
He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Hayden, her husband, Frank of Naugatuck, Conn.; grandchildren, Jennifer M. Runco and her husband, Michael of Cheektowaga, N.Y. and Jeffrey L. Hayden and his wife, Elizabeth of Bristol, Conn.; and great-granddaughter, Elise Hayden.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jeanette, in 1997.
