100 years ago, 1912
The Canal Street sheds of W. Janelle, coal and wood dealer, were practically destroyed by fire early Sunday afternoon. With the shed was lost a small amount of hay, wood and four delivery wagons. The fire had gained great headway before it was discovered. It was seen by several people at the same time. When the fire department arrived, the building was wrapped in flames and stables to the north were threatened. Four horses which were in the stable were saved with no little difficulty.

50 years ago, 1962
A foot race by two young Lewiston brothers came to a shattering halt last night. Police Sgt. Ralph O. Bolduc said the brothers, 14 and 16, were racing along Lincoln Street when one of them crashed into an ornamental street light pole. The vibration shook loose the light globe and it fell to the pavement and broke. The youngster had the wind knocked out of him, the sergeant said. The boys cleaned up the broken glass and were informed by police that they likely will have to pay for the broken globe.

25 years ago, 1987
Lewiston City Councilors voted Monday not to allow in-law apartments in the Suburban and Rural Residential districts proposed under the city’s new Comprehensive Land Use Plan. City councilors said they feared that officials would not be able to prevent the apartments from becoming regular rental units. In-law apartments are those built within single-family homes for relatives. “If a person sells their house with an in-law apartment, then you have two different units and you’re talking about a multifamily neighborhood. Some people want to be in an area of just single-family homes,” said Ward 4 Councilor Normand R. Poulin. “You just can’t enforce something like that.”
