100 years ago, 1912
Mrs. Annie L. of this city and a Portland man, a traveling salesman, were arrested by the Lewiston police in a raid at the former’s house Saturday morning. Both persons were asleep when the officers entered. Deputy Marshall Davis and a squad of officers gained entrance by means of a ladder. They were in the yard for about two hours but worked so quietly that no one in the vicinity knew they were around. The Portland man’s wife was an interested spectator. With her came a detective from Jersey City, whose presence in the city the police were not aware of until after the arrest, as he posed as the Portland man’s brother.

50 years ago, 1962
A gasoline station on Center Street in Auburn has dropped the price of its regular grade gasoline from 27.9 cents to 26.9 cents a gallon and another, which had been selling at 28.9 cents, also dropped to 26.9 cents a gallon. A variety of prices is being displayed on Main Street, Lewiston, the range being from 25.9 cents a gallon to 28.9 cents.

25 years ago, 1987
 Lewiston High School was among the leading contenders for the 1987 President’s Award for academic achievement by its graduates at Bates College. The prestigious award is presented annually to the secondary school represented at Bates whose top three students earned the highest combined scholastic average during the previous academic year. Lewiston placed 14th of 137 schools qualifying for the award. Representing LHS were John Blanchette and Susan Carrier, who both graduated in June, and Sally Ehrenfried, a junior.
