1918-2012
LISBON FALLS — Margaret B. Marchak, 94, of Lewiston, a life-long resident of Lisbon Falls and an avid Red Sox fan, died Wednesday Nov. 21, 2012 at the Marshwood Health Center. .
Margaret was born in Lisbon Falls, Nov. 10, 1918, the daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Borovich) Marchak. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1936. She worked in the Worumbo mills and was a receptionist until her retirement in 1994.
She was a communicant of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. When the church was established in 1995, it salvaged important artifacts from three local churches. Margaret proudly took her relatives on tours of the church to show them the stained glass window with the Marchak family name on it that her parents donated in the early 1900s to one of the churches, SS. Cyril & Methodius Church.
A life-long Red Sox fan, Margaret received team memorabilia as gifts and spent many summer evenings listening to games while sitting on her porch. She also loved to attend Seadogs’ minor league games in Portland. When the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004 she reminded everyone that the last time the team won the World Series was the year she was born. She loved living in Maine, delighting in trips to ocean, where she knew the best seafood restaurants and which ones served her favorite, lobster stew. She especially loved trips to Popham Beach, Reid State Park, and Boothbay Harbor with her nieces and their families and her nephew where she would happily spend an afternoon in a beach chair watching the waves.
Some of her fondest memories were boat rides on Casco Bay and bike rides on Cabbage Island. Until earlier this year Margaret drove herself around Lisbon Falls every afternoon “to see what I can see,” she said in February. She was fiercely independent and wonderfully stubborn and with the help of neighbors, friends and family members was able to stay in her Plummer Street home until June. Each week she could be found at the Marion T. Morse Center enjoying a meal and engaging in fellowship.
She is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Ellen, who died in 1989; and her brothers, John and Michael, who both died in 1994. Margaret also had four other siblings who died in childhood in the 1920s. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Eleanor Marchak of Rochester, N.H.; four nieces: Katherine J. Meline and her husband Steven and their two children, Katie and David of Brentwood, N.H.; Elizabeth A. Marchak and her husband, W. Stephen Hart of Arlington, VA and their son David M.M. Hart; Susan E. Marchak, of Concord, and Margaret R. Marchak, of Takoma Park, Md., and one nephew, Michael J. Marchak III, of Sacramento, Calif.
The Marchak family would like to offer special thanks to the dozens of kind-hearted friends who took care of Margaret, brought her meals, cleaned her house, took her to doctor’s appointments, did her grocery shopping, took care of her yard and provided companionship. You were indeed Margaret’s extended family.
