AUBURN — Post 31 of the Franco American War Veterans is now offering a free first year membership to all military service veterans.

Marine Corps League meeting

AUBURN — The Central Maine Detachment Marine Corps League 810 will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the American Legion Post 31, Washington Street.

Election of officers will be held. Members are encouraged to attend. All FMF corpsmen are invited.

USM program on street dust

PORTLAND — The University of Southern Maine and Cornerstones of Science announce the final installment of the Fall 2012 Science Cafes in the Atrium series held at Portland Public Library, Monument Square, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. Professor of chemistry Lucille Benedict will discuss “Street Dust’s Dirty Little Secrets,” explaining what pollutants her research has uncovered in the street dust we breath, how these pollutants get there and what impact it has on our local environment.

The Science Cafe format is an informal approach to discussing and understanding scientific research and its relevance to people in their everyday lives. The event will offer light refreshments in an informal, casual atmosphere. Students, young professionals and anyone interested in getting the inside look at what scientists are doing – and why – are invited to attend. The event is free and open to the public.

Bowdoin Historical Society meeting

BOWDOIN — The Bowdoin Historical Society will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at the FHC Building.

A society trustee and Coombs church trustee will be elected. Bring something for the refreshment table and a Christmas gift to exchange. New members are welcome.

St. Ann Sodality Christmas dinner

LEWISTON — The Ladies of St. Ann Sodality of Holy Family, Prince of Peace Parish, will be holding their annual Christmas dinner at the Green Ladle on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and may obtained by contacting any board members or Anita at 782-4516.

Entertainment will be provided by Pam Vaillancourt, who has been entertaining the Lewiston/Auburn community for several years. She has been in several Community Little Theater productions and also with the Vintage band with Roger Renaud.

There will be door prized, 50/50 and the cash raffle winners will be announced.

Free women’s Advent seminar

LISBON — St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church is offering a free women’s Advent seminar, “Hannah, Mary, and Longing,” led by Teresa Bernier on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Child care is available upon request.

Bernier was born in Lisbon and educated in Freeport. She returned to Lisbon and worked in the high school kitchen for years. Unchurched as a child, she was drawn to Jesus as a teenager when she started attending St. Matthew’s. Over the years she has served as part of St. Matthew’s worship team, vestry, warden and Sunday School teacher. In 1997, she was appointed Director of Christian Education.

Burnt Meadow DAR meets Dec. 8

LISBON FALLS — Burnt Meadow Chapter of Sabattus, Daughters of the American Revolution will assemble on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the home of Jayne Bickford.

There will be a potluck luncheon and gifts of not over $10. Members will make plans for the coming year before recessing until March 9.

Library, museum Winter Festival

TURNER — Turner Public Library and History Museum will hold the ninth annual Winter Festival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Leavitt Institute Building, Turner Center.

There will be a silent auction, raffle, craft exhibits/sales, Hornets in Harmony, story time, Santa Claus listening and Mrs. Claus reading, luncheon, bake sales, Christmas decoration sales and a Giving Tree Food Drive.

Discussion group for cancer caregivers

LEWISTON — The Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing is offering a free discussion group for cancer caregivers scheduled for Monday, Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dempsey Center, 29 Lowell St.

Join other caregivers, a relative or friend who provides emotional support and/or physical care to someone with cancer. This meeting will provide a comfortable environment to share with others that understand your situation and an opportunity to learn about caregiver resources at the Dempsey Center.

Extension group to meet, elect

LISBON FALLS — The Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties Extension Association will hold its annual meeting and elect new officers at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10 at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office, 24 Main St.

A potluck dinner will follow the meeting, which is open to the public.

The ASCEA is actively recruiting new members. In partnership with UMaine Extension staff, the members of each county UMaine Extension association assist with providing input on local educational programming needs and oversee the county budget appropriations that support UMaine Extension educational programs for county residents.

YWCA swim lesson schedule

LEWISTON — The YWCA has a full schedule of swim lessons which are available mornings, afternoons, evenings and Saturday mornings. Registration is available now. Swim lessons will begin the week of Dec. 30. Details of times may be found at www.ywcamaine.org or by calling 795-4050.

Water babies, Puddle Jumpers and Parent & Tot classes are available for children ages 6 month through 35 months. These are water adjustment classes. Parents accompany their child in the water. YWCA staff will help parents select the appropriate class and there are many time slots during the week.

Water Explorers is for children 2 to 6 years who are afraid of being in the water and helps them conquer this fear. Parents accompany their child in the water.

Aquatots, Guppies, Jellyfish, Polliwog and Tadpole classes are all designed to help children from ages 3 to 15 learn and develop the skills to become proficient swimmers. Again, classes are paced for the age and ability level of each child.

American Red Cross Water Safety classes for stroke development, stroke refinement and fitness are also offered to youth.

Adult lessons are available for those ages 15 and older who have never had swimming lessons or are still working on beginner strokes.
