AUBURN — The next L/A Film Forum on Thursday, Dec. 6, will feature “Children of the Air,” which won Best in Festival at the 2012 Lewiston Auburn Film Festival.

Also showing at the Auburn Public Library will be the 18-minute film “The Carrier” and “Colony Collapse,” festival award winner for Best Experimental.

In the 30-minute “Children of the Air,” past and present bleed into one as viewers follow the rise and demise of a young couple’s fairy tale love affair. Juxtaposed to the original fairy tale of “The Little Mermaid,” “Children of the Air” is an unflinching portrait of heartbreak. Katheryn Winnick and Travis Van Winkle star as Samantha and Trey, a young couple trying to salvage a haunting moment that has passed them by.

In “The Carrier,” Thatcher, a self-fashioned ladies man, takes a wrong step one morning and is killed in an accident. When his estranged mother, Helen, arrives to clean out his apartment, she discovers a secret that will profoundly influence her life and the lives around her, and give her a new understanding of her son.

Helen takes it upon herself to visit the laundry list of Thatcher’s ex-lovers to find out more about his hidden past. She meets a beautiful young woman with a grace to rival Helen’s own, a spunky sex shop worker and an art curator scorned by Thatcher’s unrequited love.

As Helen hears the women’s stories of loss and betrayal, triumph and ecstasy, love and heartache, she finds herself unexpectedly closer to her son. When she finds unsent passionate letters among Thatcher’s belongings, Helen must find the courage to face the love of Thatcher’s life and finally close the rift between mother and son.

“Colony Collapse” captures the portrait of a ghost city. Are people missing because they’ve simply taken shelter from the storm? Or has a more permanent event taken place? Filmed on location in Lewiston, this movie offers a hauntingly peaceful vision of the city as it becomes buried in human artifice, snow and time.

There will be a social at 6 p.m. with popcorn, candy and soda available. Screenings will start at 6:15 p.m.

Each L/A Film Forum event will include a film showing followed by a facilitated discussion based on the ideas, themes or concepts presented by the movie. All  events are free and open to adults. The series will continue on the first Thursday of each month through May 2013. For more information, call the Lewiston Public Library at 513-3135 or the Auburn Public Library at 333-6640, ext. 4.
