AUBURN — Alton C. Phinney of Greene, formerly of Lubec, died peacefully and surrounded by family at the age of 90 on Sunday, Nov. 25, at The Bolster Heights Residential Care Facility.

Alton was born Feb. 27, 1922, the son of Byron and Sadie (Wilcox) Phinney. He enrolled as a member of Company 192 with the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1939. He joined the U.S. Army in 1945, and served as a private first class in the 112 Evacuation Hospital during World War II.

While home on leave, he married Catherine A. Sprague, March 19, 1946, in Lubec. He served in France and Germany before receiving a Purple Heart for wounds he suffered in Rhineland, Germany and being honorably discharged in March 1947. Upon returning home, he worked for Denbow Fisheries manufacturing Puss n’ Boots brand cat food in Lubec.

In 1960, his family moved to Greene, after which he was elected as secretary/treasurer and contract negotiator for Local Union 385 of The Amalgamated Meat Cutters (AMCBW), officially the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America, in of Auburn. He served until he later retired, and then worked part-time for the Central Maine Youth Center in Lewiston.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine Phinney of Greene; his daughter, Sarah Phinney of Greene; his son, Quentin Phinney and his wife, Cecile, of Greene; his two grandchildren, Ryan Phinney of Greene and Kristy Phinney of Auburn; and three great-grandchildren, Danica, Brody and Gabriella.

He was predeceased by his father, Byron; his brother, Thad; his son, Larry; and his mother, Sadie.

The family wants to extend their sincerest gratitude to the nurses and staff at the Bolster Heights Residential Care Facility for their loving care and support.
