SOUTH PORTLAND— The Portland Players’ production of Meredith Willson’s “Miracle on 34th Street, the Musical” opens Nov. 30 and runs through Dec. 16.
Drawing inspiration from the original 20th Century Fox film, director Joshua Chard and his cast and production team will take audiences back to 1955 to experience the hustle and bustle of Christmas in Manhattan.
In this musical adaptation of the classic story, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade is about to begin, but there is no one to play the role of Santa Claus. A white-bearded gentleman, Kris Kringle, agrees to participate in the parade and thus begins “the Miracle.”
He spreads a wave of love throughout New York City, fosters camaraderie between Macy’s and Gimbel’s department stores, brings together three people who are missing something in life and convinces the entire state of New York that Santa Claus is no myth.
The family-friendly show, filled with humor and songs such as “It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas,” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors and $15 for students. Tickets are available online at portlandplayers.org. Portland Players productions are at 420 Cottage Road.
