LEWISTON — A 21-year-old Lewiston woman faces charges, including arson and assault, after twice trying to ignite her boyfriend’s possessions with Molotov cocktails and leading officers on two chases, ending in her arrest at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday night in Poland.

Lewiston police were called to the area of Walnut and Shawmut streets at about 6 p.m. after a report that Heather Kullson had tried to start a fire using a lighted rag and a container with a flammable liquid, Lewiston Police Lt. Michael McGonagle said.

Cruisers arrived minutes later and pursued Kullson through nearby streets to the Maine Turnpike. When the chase reached the highway, cruisers called off the pursuit and returned to the scene,” McGonagle said.

“Then, she came back,” he said.

Kullson again tried to start a fire with the improvised incendiary and police took chase. This time, police followed her onto the turnpike, where they were joined by Maine State Police.

Kullson left the highway in Auburn and drove at high speeds along Hotel Road and Kittyhawk Avenue before her arrest in Poland.

During the chase, police tried but failed to stop Kullson’s Honda Civic with spike mats. In the rush to deploy the mats, tires on at least two cruisers were damaged, McGonagle said.

Kullson is facing two charges each of eluding police and arson. She also faces a charge of aggravated domestic violence assault.

Her boyfriend told police she used her car to run over his foot earlier in the day, McGonagle said.

On Walnut Street on Wednesday, one woman said her parked car was struck when the bottle of flammable liquid was flung. Some of the liquid also splashed against the side of a four-story apartment house at 91 Walnut St., she said.

Kullson is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail on $25,000 cash bail.
