Two construction workers had a narrow escape yesterday afternoon when a warning flare ignited gasoline fumes and set a bulldozer on fire about 10 feet away at a sewer project at East Avenue and Montello Streets, Lewiston. For some reason gasoline cans and the gas tank on the unit did not explode. “If she had blown with all those gas cans there, we’d have taken a little ride,” said Dwight R. Nichols of Whitney Street, Auburn, owner of the bulldozer, who was standing near the machine when the fire developed. A roadside warning flare 10 or 12 feet down the road caught the fumes of the gasoline and the fire flashed back to the bulldozer. After we saw it wasn’t going to blow, we moved the other gas cans out of there and put the gravel to it. The fire was out when a fire truck arrived. Nichols said it does not appear the bulldozer was damaged to a great extent, although the gas tank has considerable gravel in it.

The sounds of Christmas music and excited children’s voices filled the downtown Lewiston area Friday night as Santa Claus arrived to usher in the holiday season and light the city’s Christmas tree in Hulett Square. Santa’s arrival was preceded by appearances by Mrs. Claus, Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman and two of Santa’s elves. Mayor Alfred A. Plourde said, “I’m looking forward to next year being the most prosperous year we’ve had. Downtown Lewiston is on the move.”
