BOSTON — Senior Corey Therriault of Auburn scored 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second half as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 59-50 win over Eastern Nazarene at Tansey Gymnasium on Saturday
The Leopards, who held the Lions to nearly 36 points below their season average, overcame a pair of early deficits, including being down by four (15-11) with 9:37 remaining in the first half. Wentworth responded with a 9-2 spurt and took a 20-17 lead on a freshman Ian Therriault layup with 6:50 left.
Daniel Webster 95, Colby 93
WATERVILLE — John Hixson nailed a 3-point shot with 29 seconds left in the third overtime to give Daniel Webster the lead for good in a wild 95-93 win over Colby College in the championship game of the Colby Men’s Basketball Classic at Wadsworth Gymnasium on Saturday.
Colby’s Shane Rogers had just given his team a 93-92 lead with a 3-point shot with 1:03 to play in the third overtime. The Eagles’ Tyren Hardy was inside and passed the ball back out to Hixson for his big shot. The Mules had trouble getting a shot in the final 29 seconds and missed on a 3-point shot with about two seconds left.
Bowdoin 84, Maine Maritime 51
BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College men’s basketball team overwhelmed Maine Maritime Academy in an 84-51 victory at Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Andrew Madlinger led all players with 17 points, including 3-6 from beyond the arc while point guard Bryan Hurley scored 11 points and had 12 assists, tied for the 10th-most in a single game in program history.
Duquesne 87, Maine 73
PITTSBURGH, Penn. — The University of Maine men’s basketball team fell to Duquesne, 87-73, at A.J. Palumbo Center on Saturday.
Duquesne took a 25-19 lead midway through the first half, but the Black Bears would score the next six points courtesy of a Jon Mesghna free throw, Edwards 3-pointer and Till Gloger layup.
Women’s basketball
USM 59, E. Connecticut State 52
GORHAM — Senior guard Nicole Garland and sophomore forward Rebecca Knight combined to score 31 points to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 59-54 win over rival Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in a women’s basketball game at Hill Gymnasium on Saturday. Knight was 8-for-10 from the field for a game-high 19 points while Garland added 12 points. Knight grabbed seven rebounds and had three assists and three steals.
CMCC 81,UMMachias 74
In its first game as the No. 1 team in the country, Central Maine Community College found itselfin a hostile environment against a scrappy University of Maine at Machias team, but the Mustangs still came away with an 81-74 victory in a women’s basketball game Saturday.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early double-digit lead behind 16 first-half points from Susie French.
Machias opened the second half on a 20-0 run to take a 9-point lead. The Mustangs responded with an 8-0 run of their own, and after trading baskets, went on an 11-2 run to take the lead for good. Nohemy Aguila scored seven7 points in less than a minute during the run, and Maggie McConkey was issued an offensive foul that swung the momentum back to CMCC
Susie French led all scorers with 26 points, followed by Aguila with 17. Maggie Sabine finished with yet another double-double — 13 points and 13 rebounds.
RPI 66, Bates 53
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — A strong ensemble performance gave Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute a 66-53 win over the Bates women’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Williams Holiday Classic. Both teams came out aggressively to start the game. Freshman Chelsea Nason got things rolling for Bates just three seconds into the contest with a running layup, the start of a brief spurt that saw her score seven of the Bobcats’ first nine points while draining her first three shots from the field.
Girls’ hockey
Scarborough 1, Lewiston 0
PORTLAND — Madison O’Riley and Alyssa Hulst set up Rachel Wallace’s game-winning goal in the second period as Scarborough held on to a 1-0 victory over Lewiston in a girls’ hockey game Saturday. Both teams played well on defense. Lewiston goalie Brianna Lajoie held her ground in net.
