FARMINGTON — An informational session for those interested in becoming a Road to Recovery volunteer will take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Franklin Memorial Hospital.

The American Cancer Society is recruiting volunteers to ensure all cancer patients have transportation to and from their treatments.

Many patients need daily or weekly treatment and may be too tired or weak to drive themselves. Some treatments will not allow cancer patients to operate machinery. Others may not have family members they can rely on for support.

People with a car and a few hours to spare, or even an hour, whether once a month or once a week, can help cancer patients as a Road to Recovery driver.

“Not only do patients benefit from our Road to Recovery program, but the volunteers do also. They often comment on the great feelings they get from knowing they’re literally giving someone  a ride (and) helping to save a life,” said Jessica Reed, community executive for the American Cancer Society.

The Road to Recovery program became a national program in 1983 and is celebrating its 30th birthday in 2013.

For more information about the program or to register for Friday’s training session, contact Jessica Reed at 373-3730, or by email to Jessica.Reed@cancer.org
