LEWISTON — The PBS documentary film “Not in Our Town: Light in the Darkness” will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, in the hall at Holy Family Church, 607 Sabattus St.
Hosting the screening is Welcoming Maine, a community group that works to improve social integration between new and native Mainers.
The film, which has twice been shown at the Lewiston Public Library, tells the story of Patchogue, N.Y., and the community’s response to an influx of Ecuadorian immigrants as it focuses on issues of community, immigration and acceptance.
At Wednesday’s event, organizers look forward to a post-film dialogue about “Somali refugee and native Lewiston-Auburn interactions and tensions with the Catholic community in the city,” according to Elena Jay, a student organizer at Bates College.
“We are excited to collaborate with Monsignor Caron, the pastor at Holy Family, in addition to Holy Cross and the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, to make the screening on Wednesday a reality,” she said.
The public is invited to attend; there is no charge.
