AUGUSTA — Virginia D. (LaBrecque) LaFleur, 91, a resident of Mount Vernon, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Maine Veterans’ Home.

She was born March 27, 1921, in Chisholm, the daughter of Emile and Delzida (Rouillard) LaBrecque. Virginia was a 1939 graduate of Jay High School and continued her education at St. Mary’s School of Nursing and received her bachelor’s degree from University of Nebraska-Omaha. Virginia served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1972, during World War II, Korea and Vietnam. During her time in Japan, she was one of the first Caucasian women to climb Mount Fuji.

She worked at Togus Veterans Hospital in Augusta and was the mill nurse for IP at the Otis Mill in Jay. In November 1985, at St. Rose of Lima Church, she married Robert LaFleur Sr. and they made their home in Mount Vernon. She was a communicant of St. Francis Xavier in Winthrop and a member of the Daughters of Isabella and the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 in Jay.

She is survived by her husband, Robert LaFleur Sr. of Mount Vernon; her stepson, Robert LaFleur Jr. and his wife, Christine, of Jay; three stepgrandchildren, Robert and Scott Cranmer of New Jersey, and Emilly LaFleur of Jay; her sister, Sandra Chretien and her husband, Roland, of Livermore Falls; her special niece, Patty Beaulieu of Livermore Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Norris, Raymond and Lawrence LaBrecque; and her stepdaughter, Nancy Cranmer.
