FARMINGTON — Franklin County commissioners voted Tuesday to allow changes to improve the clerk’s desk in the Superior Courtroom. The county will be reimbursed for the cost after the work is done and paid for.

The Maine Judicial Branch is creating a unified criminal division and some of what is being done across Main Street at the 12th District Court will be done at Superior Court at the courthouse, Jeffrey Henthorn, director of court facilities, told commissioners.

The clerk’s bench in front of the judge’s bench will be removed and a 7½-foot long counter will be installed with enough space for two clerks to work and for two computer monitors.

The current bench is 36 inches across and on a slant.

“We want to make it more ergonomic and more functional,” he said.

The state of Maine Judicial Branch will reimburse all expenses,” Henthorn said.

The Maine Historical Preservation Commission has approved the proposed design for the new bench, county Clerk Julie Magoon said Wednesday. The commission has asked that they try to preserve the original bench when it is being taken apart and to keep it stored at the courthouse, she said.

The judge’s bench is 9½ feet across and will remain the primary focus in the courtroom, Henthorn said.
