RUMFORD — Mountain Valley High School sophomore Adelle Oswald was selected to attend the Maine Youth Leadership program as an ambassador in mid-May. The program is a four-day leadership conference at the University of Southern Maine’s campus in Gorham.
Oswald wrote about two aspects of leadership in her application essay: being a role model and the effect a leader has on other people.
“If someone knows I get good grades they might look up to me as a role model,” Oswald wrote. “Once they notice how much I study they might do the same to improve their grades. I like being a role model because it makes me feel important and respected in school.”
She continued about the effect on others, “The youth group that I’m involved in participates in community service sometimes. Being involved in community service could encourage more people to help out.”
Oswald also recognizes the trials of leadership. “One challenging aspect of being a leader is the pressure that comes with everyone analyzing your every move.”
Oswald shows developing leadership skills in team sports such as basketball, softball and soccer. She sings in chorus and frequently performs the National Anthem. Oswald participates in Youth Ministry at Holy Savior Church and recently landed a job at Black Mountain.
According to the website, MYL’s goal is “to motivate Maine’s future leaders and create a network of civic-minded students who will better their communities through volunteering.”
MYL programs are provided free of charge to students. Program expenses are paid through donations to the nonprofit organization.
