RUMFORD — The Pennacook Art Center opened its new show at the River Valley Technology Center Thursday night, highlighting new paintings, drawings and photographs by local artists.

Chris Wing, who helped put the show together, said she wasn’t sure how the turn-out would be due to the Christmas of the Valley parade going on around the same time — but he was appreciative that local artists would at least have the opportunity to showcase their work for the rest of the town.

“We used to have our own building on Congress Street,” Wing said, “but we had to move out because of money issues. The River Valley Technology Center was nice enough to let us move in here. We’re able to line their walls with beautiful art and share our art with the town.”

The show included several local artists who were available to discuss their work, including Wing herself, Carole Rickards, Brenda Baker, Jim Mulvaney and Grace McKivergan.

Wing, Rickards and Baker all showcased various drawings and paintings. Mulvaney, who is a photographer, put some of his pictures up, while McKivergan hung a variety of hand-woven sweaters, scarves and bags on the walls, interspersed with the other artwork.

Richards praised Wing for getting the show together.

“When I was in school, Chris was my teacher,” Richards said. “She was a huge inspiration for me becoming an artist. I used to do this for a living, but now I substitute teach.”

Wing and the rest of the artists offered refreshments as well, including wine, cheese, mulled cider and an opportunity to win a door prize.

The artwork displayed at the Pennacook Art Center will remain up for the next two months.
