JAY — Fire Engine 3 will get a new coat of paint.

Selectmen voted Monday to pay the town’s share of about $2,100, or 24 percent, to paint the E-One engine that is six years old and still under warranty. Selectman Justin Merrill, a firefighter, abstained from the vote.

Prior to the vote, Public Safety Director Larry White Sr. told selectmen the truck has some peeling paint and some rust. Initially it was discussed that the town would pay about 50 percent of the cost but after negotiations, the counteroffer resulted in the town’s share being lowered, he said.

“It’s a really good offer. If we wait it’s only going to get worse,” White said.

The whole truck will be painted, board Chairman Steve McCourt said.

“It is pretty sad. I know how the (Fire Rescue) Department takes care of trucks,” Merrill said.

He suggested that they possibly look elsewhere to buy a firetruck.

The remainder of the paint job’s cost will be paid for by E-One.

In other business, selectmen reappointed April Hartford, Charles Reikert, Vickie Braley and Ricky Merrill to two years on the Budget Committee.

Michael Collins didn’t want to be reappointed, Town Manager Ruth Cushman said.

That leaves two regular positions and two alternate positions open to be filled by residents.

The board also appointed Darren Roundy to be a trustee of the Jay Village Water District to fill a position held by Richard Jackson, who resigned.

In other matters, Santa Claus is coming to visit the Jay Town Office from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13.

The Town Office will be closed Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, and Christmas Day, Dec. 25. It will be open New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, and closed on New Year’s Day, Jan. 1, 2013.

The next selectmen’s meeting will be Monday, Jan. 13, 2013, because the second meeting in December would have fallen on Christmas Eve.

The board also approved a special entertainment permit for Steppin’ Out in North Jay after a public hearing. No comments were made. Police Chief Larry White Sr. said there have been no complaints about the business.
