RUMFORD — Alfred Edward McKenna Jr., 82, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, at his residence on Knox Street, Rumford with his loving family at his side.

He was born in Rumford, April 16, 1930, a son of Alfred E and Rosetta (Aylward) McKenna Sr. He attended schools in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an airman first class from 1955 to 1959.

He worked for Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford, where he had been employed for 43 years. He was a hard working man and instilled that work ethic in each of his girls.

Alfred was a communicant of the Parish of The Holy Savior and was a member of Napoleon Ouellette Post 24, American Legion. He was an avid cribbage player; it didn’t matter where or with whom. And he hated to lose. He enjoyed horse racing and NASCAR.

Even though he lived and raised his family in Rumford, Prince Edward Island was always where he wanted to be. He couldn’t wait to go “home to the Island” every summer. He loved to sit on his deck at the summer home, and was a fortunate enough to make one last trip home in the summer of this year.

He was married in Mexico, Nov. 21, 1956, to Joyce Taylor, who survives of Rumford. Other survivors include five daughters, Donna Ladd of Jay, Linda Blais and husband, John, of Rumford, Lori Mills and husband, Ronnie, of Mexico, Bev Thorne and husband, Jerry, of Rumford and Heather MacDonald and husband, Rusty, of Rumford; three brothers, Roy McKenna and wife, Helen and Leonard McKenna of PEI, Canada, and Lloyd McKenna of Rumford; four sisters, Barbara Poirier, Grace Walsh and husband, Bob, Roberta Gillis and Carol McKenna, all of PEI, Canada; two sisters-in-law, Irene McKenna of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Thelma McKenna of East Milton; brother-in-law, Jim Taylor and wife, Rose, of Mexico; he was a proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, Michael, Julie and Jenn Ladd, John and Kristen Blais, Brandon and Alex Arsenault, Bobbie McKenna and husband, Cory, Lucas Zale and companion, Hannah, Kate and Ellen Thorne, Riley and Gavin MacDonald; a great-granddaughter, Isabelle Alfreda Zale; and a special niece, Chris Farrar and husband, Richard, of Rumford.
