LIVERMORE FALLS — The principals in each of RSU 73’s five schools told students Monday morning that counselors were available for any child affected by Friday’s tragic shootings at the Newtown, Conn., elementary school.

Superintendent Robert Wall said although he believes the security systems in each of the schools is quite efficient, it may not be good enough.

He said the schools require a card to be swiped or a buzzer pressed before entry, and security cameras are in place in several schools. In addition, when the renovation is made at Spruce Mountain High School in Jay next year, a security office and additional cameras will be installed.

“Our feelings (about the tragedy) are in keeping with the nation,” he said Monday afternoon.

Besides the new security cameras, Wall said the schools’ crisis teams plan to meet with the Jay and Livermore Falls police departments, as well as the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Department to review emergency plans. He said, too, that the school department will work with the emergency plans in the district’s member towns of Jay, Livermore and Livermore Falls.

“We’re working to make sure we have a safe place,” he said.
