DEAR SUN SPOTS: Western Foothills Kids Association, the after-school program in RSU 10, is looking for musical greeting cards. They can be any song, include lights, too; used is fine.

If you have some you are willing to donate, please send them to WFKA, 33 Nash St., Dixfield ME 04224 or call Barb 357-6987 to make arrangements for them to be picked up. We have a great project to make with them!

We are also collecting 1,400 clear 2-liter bottles to make into a greenhouse. They can be dropped off at RSU 10 Central Office, Mountain Valley high or middle schools, or call 357-6987 for pick up.

Thank you! — Barb Radmore, bradmore@rsu10.org

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I wonder if any descendants of Mary (born September 1860) and William Leonard (born 1858) are still in the area?

They lived on Bartlett, then Horton, then East Avenue. Their daughter Mary Frye Leonard (born December 1890), married Albert Kavanagh (1873-1933) in July 1926. Her sister, Christine Margaret Leonard M.D., was born October 1886, died May 1980 in Florida. Christine took her specialty in psychiatry to New York City in 1933.

I’m hoping that descendants may have a photo of Christine that I might include in my next book on the history of Maine’s pioneering female physicians from 1850 to 1920. I’m telling the stories of more than 200 of these remarkable Maine women. Thank you. — Annette Dorey, dorey@gwi.net

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I found your answer to Jo inquiring about Odd Fellows (Nov. 29), very interesting. Even though I am a 62-year Rebekah, which is the women’s branch of the Odd Fellows, I had never heard about the history back as far as the 1400s.

The information you printed from the Odd Fellow website tells very well our mission. I will add that the Rebekahs and Odd Fellows work together to accomplish this mission.

We are a fraternity, a worldwide organization with members in the United States and Canada, as well as 19 other countries.

Rebekahs meet in groups or “lodges” on a regular basis, usually twice a month. Each meeting night includes a social hour, sometimes a program or entertainment, and usually refreshments as well as a business meeting with an agenda.

Rebekahs and Odd Fellows come from all walks of life and from different faiths. We do not take the place of a church or synagogue. We have a common belief in a Supreme Being, a love and loyalty to our country, and a desire to aid and support each other and those around us in affliction or distress.

Rebekahs and Odd Fellows work together to raise money through various projects, events or sales to support our benevolences, special projects and special activities.

Projects and benevolences supported by our worldwide order include, but are not limited to Visual Research, Arthritis Foundation, U.N. Pilgrimage for Youth, IOOF Educational Foundation Scholarship Programs, World Hunger and Disaster Fund, Rose Parade Float, SOS Village in Cambodia and the Living Legacy.

In addition to those listed above, Maine Odd Fellows and Rebekahs support our Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home in Auburn, which provides both residential and nursing home care.

We also support our youth camp, Camp NEOFA (which stands for Northeast Oddfellows Association), in Montville and the Ellen Washburn Nurses Training Award program.

More information about each of these may be found on the Web. Just google Oddfellows and Rebekahs. — Esther Tucker, member of Liberty Rebekah Lodge No. 94, Auburn, 998-5359
