LEWISTON — Leo R. Bernier, 88, of Webber Avenue, Lewiston, died Thursday, Dec. 20, at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born in Lewiston, May 9, 1924, the son of the late Rodolphe and Rose (Hardy) Bernier and had been a resident of this community all of his life. On June 26, 1948, he married the former Juliette Lawrence in Woonsocket, R.I.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving from 1943 to 1945.

He was a member of the Lewiston Fire Department for more than 30 years retiring in 1986.

He was a parishioner of Holy Cross Church, a member of the American Legion Post 22, Holy Family Bowling League and enjoyed both swimming and walking.

Leo is survived by his wife, Juliette Bernier; two daughters, Helene and her husband, John Sprague and Denise Chaput, all of Lewiston; three sons, David Bernier and his wife, Rachel, of Sabattus, Daniel Bernier and his wife, Doris, of Auburn and Leo A. Bernier and his wife, Diane, of Minot; a sister-in-law, Josephine Bernier of Auburn; eight grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Mark Bernier in 1997; one sister, Priscilla Roux; and two brothers, George and Yvon Bernier.
