LEWISTON — The Christmas break certainly feels merrier when it includes a winning streak.

The Lewiston girls’ hockey team went into the holiday break Saturday with a fourth straight win, beating St. Dom’s 5-1.

“You like taking that Christmas break having some wins under your belt,” said Lewiston coach Ron Dumont. “It’s so much better to go into the holiday with a win.”

Lewiston (6-2) has scored 20 goals in the last four wins and 32 overall this season. The Blue Devils built a 2-0 lead in the first. Though the Saints got close with a tally late in the opening period, Lewiston scored twice in the second.

Corinne Laberge had a pair of goals for the Blue Devils. Natalie Rousseau had a goal and an assist while Erica Lemieux had a pair of assists.

“I was happy because we got something from kids we haven’t heard from,” said Dumont. “We kind of mixed it up. I told them it was all about getting a win here.”

Lewiston goalie Brianna Lajoie had 15 saves. St. Dom’s lone goal came from Kayla McLellan late in the first.

“I thought we played well,” said St. Dom’s coach Paul Gosselin, whose team is now 2-6. “It seems like against the stronger teams, we’re getting better and better. The scores are going down and the endurance is picking up. I’m pretty proud of the success tonight.”

Lewiston put pressure on early but couldn’t finish. Then with 6:52 left, Brittany Foley was there to put in a rebound.

“They had the jitters in the first period,” said Dumont. “Even sometimes when we’re nervous and not playing quite the way I like to, that’s a lesson too. You have to get yourselves back and know how to fix it. They’re doing that.”

St. Dom’s had a chance to tie. McLellan had a couple of rushes. Then late in the period, Emily Poulin had a shot saved, and Tia Rotolico’s try at the rebound went wide.

With 2:19 left, Lewiston made it 2-0. Lemieux made a nice pass from the right wing to Laberge all alone on the left side.

St. Dom’s answered with 46 seconds left. McLellan backhanded in a rebound.

That momentum was short-lived. Just 1:33 into the second, Sadie Poulin made it 3-1. Then with 5:34 left, Laberge netted her second with another wrister from the left cirlce off a Lemieux pass.

The Saints best chance came when Poulin put a shot on net from the corner. It got loose in front but Jessica Boulet couldn’t bury it.

“With a young team, the wind went out of their sails a little bit,” said Gosselin. “They seem to come back and we’re still working on that.”

Lewiston added to the lead in the third when Rousseau fired in a wrister from the high slot with 8:48 left.

St. Dom’s was was wearing blue-colored jerseys Saturday in honor of their late coach Don Boucher.
