100 years ago, 1912
That no injury occurred when the floor of the Methodist Church at Lisbon Falls settled Sunday evening just before the Christmas concert is the comment about town today. The cool headedness of the pastor, Rev. E.L. Farnsworth, and of C.W. Whitehouse had a great deal to do with the ease with which the church was emptied. The floor settled six inches or so in the center. Excavations have been made recently under the building by men of the church for a new room and it has been said by those who saw the work of putting the piers into place that they were very insecure.

50 years ago, 1962
A tremendous crowd of last-minute shoppers flocked to Lewiston-Auburn’s downtown section today creating one of the worst traffic tie-ups in the history of the two communities. Cars jammed both main and feeder streets. Both the North and South bridges were packed with vehicles, and all police officers on beats in the downtown sections were put on traffic duty before noon. “The traffic is wicked,” Lt. Herve Gendreau of the Lewiston Police Department reported from his Main and Park Street post. In Auburn, Police Capt. Lawrence Marczak reported all streets leading into town, and both bridges, tied up.

25 years ago, 1987
Lewiston-Auburn postal workers weathered the annual flood of holiday mail with few hitches. “It’s been going extremely well,” said Lewiston Postmaster Roland Metayer. On Tuesday, he said carriers delivered about 70,000 pieces of mail, which is a two-percent increase over last year. Auburn Postmaster Gus Karlsen said the Auburn Post Office experiences roughly the same increase in volume.
