Beekeepers to meet Jan. 2
AUBURN — The Androscoggin Beekeepers Club will meet Wednesday, Jan. 2. The group will gather at a new meeting place, room 206 of Auburn City Building, 60 Court St. Park in the garage behind the building, enter at the ground floor door by the police station and take the elevator to the second floor.
The club meeting at 6:30 p.m. will be followed by a lecture at 7 p.m. and informal discussion thereafter. Social hour will take place at Gritty’s after meeting for those so inclined.
The month’s speaker will be Rick Cooper, whose topic will be “Bees in winter, what the heck happens in the hive?” Everyone interested in keeping or co-existing with bees is invited, and there is no charge.

Maine Media Women meeting
DAMARISCOTTA — Maine Media Women will meet on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Mobius Center, beginning at 9:15 a.m. This “Member Showcase” meeting will feature three MMW members: Janice Lindsay on mandalas and spiritual literacy, Daphne Stern on Hospice volunteering, and Peggy Gannon on Jhumki Basu. Open to the public. Suggested donation is $3 for members and $5 for guests.
KVCC spring registration
FAIRFIELD – Registration for the spring 2013 semester at Kennebec Valley Community College is underway for all students.
Registration will continue through the start of the spring semester on Jan. 7. Students are reminded that some classes fill up quickly, and are encouraged to register as early as possible.

Winter outings skills workshop
FALMOUTH — The Maine Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club will hold a free Winter Outings Skills Workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Gilsland Farm Audubon Center, 20 Gilsland Farm Road. The event was rescheduled due to inclement weather on Dec. 17.
AMC Maine Chapter leaders Peter Broderick and Laura Flight will discuss clothing, gear, snow travel and other essential knowledge to prepare for outdoor outings in the winter. This event is intended as an introduction course for experienced three-season hikers and a refresher for experienced winter adventurers. Although the focus of the workshop is on hiking in the winter, many of the topics apply to any outdoor winter outing.

Outstanding Teens sought
BRUNSWICK — The Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen Program is accepting applications for “at large” contestants to compete in the Miss Maine’s Outstanding Teen pageant in mid-June at Crooker Theater at Brunswick High School. The pageant is the official state preliminary to the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant held each August in Florida.
All contestants, aged 13-17 and not a high school senior, will compete in the following phases of competition: interview, scholastic achievement, talent, evening gown and physical fitness. Contestants need to choose a platform of their choice to promote awareness within their community.

4-H Club focus to be dairy goats
YARMOUTH — A new 4-H Club with a focus on raising and showing Dairy Goats is starting in North Yarmouth.
Anyone interested in all things related to goats, as well as participating in fun, hands-on life skills and leadership training, is invited to join youth and adult volunteers as they start a 4-H Goat Club for Cumberland County.
Meetings will be the second Monday of each month beginning on Jan. 14, at 6:30 p.m. In June, meetings may be weekly as 4-Hers prepare their projects for demonstration and/or the Cumberland County Fair.
Youth ages 9 to 18 are welcome. This club also will have goat-related programming for children younger than 9, who are called 4-H Cloverbuds.
