Christmas marked the opening of the Christmas Savings Club. At the noon hour, the real rush began and the bank was unable to close the doors in the afternoon until 6 o’clock. Leavitt Farms of Turner are now operating the first free-stall housing system in New England. The new operation is managed by Paul and Mavis Varney, who have been associated with the Leavitt Farms for several years. The new concept of housing dairy cattle features a barn 48 feet wide and 324 feet long. The roof is of truss construction which eliminates all posts. The animal steps up into a stall which is supplied with nearly a foot of bedding to insulate the cow from the ground cold. The animals are not secured in place and may come and go as they wish.
