Annual Appeal is underway

PARIS — In 2012 the McLaughlin Garden & Homestead in South Paris attained 15 years as a nationally recognized, unique public attraction.

The property’s history began in the early 1800s and represents the evolution of home, barn and garden. For many years Bernard McLaughlin was the property’s steward and creator of the vernacular garden. Preserving these treasures and expanding the enjoyment and participation in the continuing story of the McLaughlin Garden and Homestead is the focal point of the current Annual Appeal.

Many people have been touched by the garden and homestead in different ways – for some it’s the beauty of the gardens, for some it is the historic barn, for others it is the lovely 19th century homestead in the middle of a modern day main street setting. 2012 draws to a close after a full year of wonderful events like the Winter Lecture Series, Wildflower Celebration, Lilac Festival, Garden Illuminated and Art in the Barn exhibits.

Thanks to an education grant awarded by Project Canopy, the State of Maine Forest Service’s community-forest program, more than 100 identification labels now appear on many of the trees and shrubs in the garden.

Two grants awarded this year provide for building restoration needs. The Davis Family Foundation Grant and the Maine Community Foundation’s Belvedere Grant have been allocated to take care of maintenance issues. The Liberty Mutual Lewiston office continues its commitment as season underwriter and sends its employees to volunteer on the annual Serve with Liberty day.

Many local businesses and individuals from near and far faithfully support the foundation by sponsoring events, becoming members, responding to the Annual Appeal and spending countless hours volunteering in one way or another.

Exciting plans for 2013 include a kitchen renovation in order to reopen the cafe and once again provide the community with a gathering place to linger after a garden tour, a program or a stop at the gift shop. This is a major undertaking which will enhance future events, weddings and program delivery.
