1916 – 2012

AUGUSTA — Dr. Winifred Holmes Griffin, 96, of Augusta, passed away Friday, Dec. 21, of natural causes.

Winnie was born on April 4, 1916, in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Joseph W. and Bertha (Moser) Holmes. She attended schools in Brockton, Mass., and Rochester, N.Y., graduating from Belmont High School, Belmont, Mass.

Winnie attended the University of Rochester, N.Y., and the Boston School of Nursing and received her R.N. in 1941 while working at Massachusetts General Hospital. She then received her BSN in nursing education from Columbia University in 1943 and a master’s in nursing (MSN) from Boston University in 1952. Winnie did her predoctoral studies with a concentration in psychology and geriatrics from Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Winifred was rewarded for her life’s work in nursing education with an Honorary Doctorate of Science (Honara Causa) from the University of Vermont in 1972.

Winnie was an assistant professor at Boston University School of Nursing, regional director of New England Board of Higher Education, served on the New England Council of Higher Education in Nursing, was a charter fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and was nominated by the state of North Carolina to the Women’s Forum for contributions to the state of North Carolina.

Winnie was married to George Francis Griffin, who passed way at their home in Waynesville, N.C., in 1991. She worked at hospitals in Massachusetts, Florida and North Carolina. For a period of time, Winnie was a public health nurse in Maine. Early in her career, she developed an interest in watercolor painting. Winnie was an accomplished watercolor artist well into her 90s.

She is survived by one sister, Dorothea Holmes Eaton of Monrovia, Calif.; nieces, Cynthia (and Robert) Britton of Duarte, Calif., and Christine E. (and Richard) Dunning of Chatham, N.J.; nephews, David J. Holmes (and Jane) of Plymouth, Robert J Holmes (and Virginia) of Winter Springs, Fla., Theodore M. Holmes (and Lynette) of Fernandina Beach, Fla., and Bruce M. Holmes (and Pia) of Manchester; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Two brothers and their wives, Robert J. and Doris Holmes of Manchester and Theodore M. and Floy Holmes, predeceased Winifred.
