100 years ago, 1913

The pleasant relations existing between O.H. Olfene, proprietor of Olfene’s Market and his clerks was further strengthened by the fine New Year’s banquet which he gave them last evening at Rounds Restaurant on Court street, Auburn. To make the occasion more memorable, Mr. Olfene distributed one hundred dollars in gold among them, each man finding at his place a beautiful souvenir of the time and an envelope containing his share of the gold coin. Olfene’s Market, which is one of the most up to date in the State, has had a prosperous year, the whole force working together harmoniously to give the best possible service to the public.

50 years ago, 1963

Lewiston firemen today were called upon several times to perform salvage work as water pipes, split by the recent deep freeze, thawed out and sprayed water all over the place. The first call came at 4:55 this morning and crews went to 33 Maple St. where a water pipe had burst on the top floor. The department also received two calls for assistance and sent equipment to 56 Knox St. and 145 Lincoln St. In both cases, broken pipes were leaking.

25 years ago, 1988

As part of a nationwide marketing move, J.C. Penney at the Auburn Mall is closing out most of its housewares department and all of its camera and home-entertainment department in favor of an expanded clothing line. “We’re enlarging the clothing selection. We’ve been so crowded,” said Keith Buckingham, visual presentations supervisor at the J.C. Penney store in Auburn.” We’re keeping lamps and bedding and bath,” he said.
