FALMOUTH – It was the Kyle and Kyle show for the Lewiston Blue Devils boys’ varsity hockey team.

Freshman Kyle Morin scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and senior Kyle Lemelin added a goal Saturday night, lifting Lewiston over Greely, 4-2, at Family Ice.

Belleau called this game against Greely a “must-win” in order to insert a sense of urgency into the lineup after a poor showing against Falmouth in the same arena less than two days ago.

“I thought we outplayed them in the first period, in the second period we played well. I thought we controlled most of the third period,” said Lewiston head coach Jamie Belleau. “You can’t panic. As a coach you want your team to respond the right way. This was a game that we told them they needed to have a little urgency. The season wasn’t going to end, but after losing to Falmouth and starting the season 3-1-1, it was important to come out of here 4-2-1 instead of 3-3-1.”

Lewiston responded, outshooting Greely 9-2 in the first period, despite trailing 1-0 on a goal by Joe Saffin.

Saffin worked his way around the Lewiston defense for a breakaway, slipping a backhander past goaltender Evan Bourassa at the 8:32 mark of the first period.

Lemelin put Lewiston on the scoreboard three minutes into the second period with a shot from the right circle that handcuffed Greely netminder Kyle Kramlich between the legs, tying the game at 1-1.

Aiden Black put Greely back out front, 2-1, with 37 seconds left in a four-on-four. He worked himself to the left circle and snapped a backhander by Bourassa (18 saves) at the 4:31 mark of the second period.

“We didn’t take enough shots on the Falmouth goalie so we wanted to get pressure on them,” said Belleau. “The kids made two mistakes and they scored so we need to get better on that, but at this point in the season I’m really proud of the way the team responded.”

Lewiston fall into penalty trouble late into the second period as Greely had a 5-on-3 for 1:34, but it was the Blue Devils that found a way to put a goal on the scoreboard.

Morin created a turnover, picking off a Greely defenseman at center ice, racing in alone on a breakaway, beating Kramlich for a 3-on-5 shorthanded goal at 11:24 of the second period.

Morin tallied his second goal of the night less than three minutes later with a blast from the left point, giving the Blue Devils the lead, 3-2, with 42 seconds left in the second period.

“To be put into a high-pressure situation, the kids responded exceptionally well,” Belleau said. “It was a great individual effort by Morin. He’s a freshman, and for him to do that was great. I’m really proud of him.”

Evan Gosselin added an insurance goal with 4:55 to play in the game, tapping in a rebound in midair by Kramlich, who stopped 25 of 29 shots in the loss.
