JAY — Police are investigating the theft of two loaded handguns taken from a house on Knoll Circle either Monday night or early Tuesday, Jay police Detective Richard Caton IV said Tuesday.

A bottle of ketchup and five energy drinks were also taken.

Police responded to a report of a burglary just after 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

Entry was gained into the house by force.

The burglary occurred between 7 p.m. on Monday and 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Caton said.

One handgun was a Glock 9 mm and the other was a Smith & Wesson 10 mm, he said.

Caton and officer Russell Adams were assisted by Franklin County Sheriff Deputy David Rackliffe and his police dog, Justice.

Rackliffe and Justice followed a track from the house through the woods to Route 140 where the scent was lost, Caton said.

It is believed a vehicle was waiting on Route 140, also known as Intervale Road, in the vicinity of a garage owned by George Merrill & Son Logging LLC., Caton said.

Police are asking if anyone saw anything suspicious overnight in the area or someone walking through the woods or have any information on the case to call Caton at the Jay Police Department at 897-6766.
