JAY – An Augusta man was arrested Sunday when police learned the truck he was sitting in at the C.N. Brown gas station and convenience store on Main Street was stolen.

Jay officer Russell Adams arrested Darren L. Costa, 47, on a felony charge of unauthorized use of property. Costa was issued a summons on a felony charge of theft, police Chief Larry White Sr. said Monday.

Costa was at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta and went to the parking garage and “helped himself” to a 2002 Dodge Ram, dual-wheel truck, he said. The owner worked at the hospital and the keys were in the truck, White said.

Costa, who was formerly from the Jay area, drove the truck to the C.N. Brown station in Jay, White said. Responding to a report about him, police  asked him what he was doing and Costa said he was waiting for someone to show up so he could buy pot, White said.

Adams learned the truck had been stolen earlier in the day, White said.

When Adams handcuffed Costa and tried to place him in the cruiser, Costa became confrontational and police officers from Livermore Falls and Wilton responded. Costa told police he was going to “beat a few people” once the handcuffs were taken off at the Franklin County jail in Farmington, White said.

Later, a C.N. Brown clerk called police to say Costa stole diesel fuel at the station, he said.

Costa’s bail was set at $1,000 cash bail or a Maine pretrial service agreement on Monday, a jail representative said.
