100 years ago, 1913
The Poland Paper Co.’s mill at Mechanic Falls is shut down this week for repairs. Several changes are being made and the carpenters and mechanics are busy. A new storehouse is being built near the coal sheds on the spur track. This will be about 70 by 80 feet. People here miss the whistle, as that too has suspended this week. It is not known just what day the mill will resume operations.

50 years ago, 1963
Members of the Lewiston Board of Aldermen who walk out of a meeting should lose their pay and repeaters ought to be fined, Ward Five Aldermanic candidate Adelard I. Michaud said last night. He said that, if elected, he would ask for enactment of a law with this in mind. In a statement, Michaud said, “Mr. Mayor, you have the gavel. You should see that these meetings are conducted in a respectful manner.”

25 years ago, 1988
Fred Gage, Lewiston Journal sports editor, has been selected as the recipient of the 1987 Media Award for Excellence by the Maine Harness Horsemen’s Association. The group chose Gage for his reporting on harness racing last year. Gage covers the Maine Harness racing Commission hearings at Augusta on a regular basis and attends many harness races throughout the year. Gage will be honored by the Harness Horsemen’s Association at its annual banquet January 16.
