DEAR SUN SPOTS: On Dec. 29 there was a picture on Page B4 of Rusty Rogers. Could you please find out if he has any CDs or DVDs for sale? If so, how can I obtain them? Thank you. — No Name via email

ANSWER: Because the name is so common, Sun Spots cannot be sure there are not other better sources locally or online, but she did find Rusty on a website for traditional country music featuring Ken MacKeznie (www.mackenziewsd.com/rusty.htm). In addition to selling his music, the site offers this background information:

“Rusty Rogers is in the Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut Country Music Halls of Fame. He is also a Down East Country Music Association Pioneer.

“For seven years Rusty was a member of the famous cowboy quintet, the Down Homers. They were the East Coast version of the nationally known Sons of the Pioneers. The Down Homers were winners on the ‘Arthur Godfrey Talent Show,’ which led to their own NBC Network show for five years. This show was broadcast over 230 stations.

“At this time, Rusty was the New England yodeling champion. Rusty went on to have his own show on the New England Regional Network. He did three live shows per week, one in Portland (WCSH), one in Burlington, Vt.(WCAX) and one in Providence, R.I.(WJAR). The show was called ‘The Rusty Rogers Show’ and featured Rusty Rogers, lead guitarist Bill King and Andy Bator on upright base.

“In 1993 Rusty’s cable TV show, ‘Rusty Rogers’ Tribute to the American Cowboy’ was awarded the best show on local TV, as voted by Cablevision, Arts and Entertainment and Bravo. The show was then featured on the Cable TV Network. Rusty’s lead guitarist on this show is Jimmy Spellman, recipient of the prestigious Lenny Breau Award. The show has assorted pioneers in the business as guests from all over New England, New York and Arizona.

“Rusty Rogers has recorded for the following labels: King, Cool, Lamb, Down Home, My Country and Travelers.”

This same website (www.mackenziewsd.com/rusty.htm) sells some of his albums — “Two Old Friends, Two Guitars & Old Standards,” “Tribute to the American Cowboy” and “Yesterday and Today.” The contact information at the bottom of the page is Rusty Rogers, The Pemaquid Cowboy, P.O. The website is poorly constructed, making it difficult to tell which album or DVD is which price, but the cost appears to be $15 or $20 for a CD.

Sun Spots did not find his music at amazon.com or at Bull Moose Music’s website (www.bullmoose.com, Lewiston Mall, 20 East Ave., Lewiston, ME 04240, 784-6463), but they may be able to get you a used CD or some local bookstores or readers may have used copies.

ANSWER: There was an Associated Press notice of her death on the obituary page, A4, on Thursday, Jan. 3. Patti died Jan. 1, but in California, too late to make the Jan. 2 paper. The story is not on the free part of the website, but you can read it if you subscribe to the e-Edition. The Sun Journal does not post all Associated Press or stories from other sources on its website, only those with Maine connections.
