The Maine Hand Engine League was entertained by the Auburn Veteran Firemen’s Association yesterday in the Sons of Veterans hall, Auburn, and an evening social gathering at the Hotel Atwood. Firemen arrived from all over the state on the previous evening’s train, renewing old acquaintanceships and talking over the old hand-tub contests. Fire department chiefs Bowker of South Paris, Chief Blethen of Auburn and Chief Moriarty of Lewiston were made honorary members.

50 years ago, 1963
The proposed construction of a new National Guard armory in Lewiston remains up in the air and there are indications the city will drop the matter. This might happen due to the city’s financial picture and also due to the apparent uncertainty of National Guard plans, it was learned last night. Mayor Donia J. Girard, who named a site committee several weeks ago, said that nothing has been done since the Bates Manufacturing Co. tax controversy came up late in 1962. The large textile firm has paid only half of its $338,000 tax bill, contending its property tax assessment is double what it ought to be. Other tax accounts are still due.

25 years ago, 1988
Operators of the Twin Cities’ sewer treatment plant plan to take a number of small steps toward rectifying a sludge-disposal problem, from streamlining the state application process for spreading the byproduct on farmland to exploring ways to reduce its volume. The Lewiston-Auburn Water Pollution Control Authority, which runs the plant, this morning authorized a plan to solicit proposals from firms that would study “dewatering,” or taking as much as 35 percent of the liquid from sludge.
